What a wonderful book. This is book 2 in this series. My 11 year old really enjoys this series as well as the Rangers Apprentice series! I too have read some (not all) of the series and find them intriguing. They are not too complicated or hard to follow. I'm no expert but would say a middle school aged child should be able to read these well. It does contain an occasional curse word (such as damn). The content is appropriate for middle school aged children. There is some fighting and things of that nature. This is a great series. We have not been disappointed by a John Flanagan book yet!

The Invaders Brotherband Chronicles Book 2 The Brotherband Chronicles John Flanagan 9780399256202 Books Reviews

The story is compelling, exciting, and filled with action. The characters are well-written and believable, as you quickly become 'a member of the crew'.
The Brotherband returns to try and make up for their mistake and finds themselves with new friends and new enemies. We enjoyed the story nightly although it felt to have lost a bit of the innocence. Guess that is to be expected as the boys are now on their own.

Great storytelling. Looking forward to the next..
After reading the Ranger's Apprentice, I was excited to learn that John Flanagan had another series set within the same time and area with familiar characters. In this book, Will and his crew help a town out while in pursuit of the villian who took the stone. The way that Will comes up with plans is great and well thought out. Plus, it's nice that there's another strong female character that comes in. Hopefully, that doesn't give away too much information. What I liked about this book Flanagan always expands and has his characters grow in personality and knowledge, the relationships you see between each character, the well thought out plan of how the characters get to their goal and how he sets up the book. What I didn't like about the book nothing. Overall, I love this series and I can't wait for the next one to come out.
I purchased this for my children (8, 10, 12) to read on their . I read their books to try to make sure they understand any parts of a book that may be unclear to them.
They loved this story. They have liked all the Ranger's Apprentice stories as well. The character and story development are not overly heavy or complex, making it a light read. There is just enough to move the story along and make the characters interesting.
My kids enjoy it enough that they play act the battles with their Nerf gear and have convinced me to take them to the archery range on several Sunday mornings.
I recommend this book as an enjoyable read for any youngsters.
After 'The Outcasts', I didn't have huge hopes for the next book in this series. I didn't see how Flanagan could even attempt to keep a cohesive story while driving the young crew of the Heron out of their homeland, Skandia. I also thought the book would be, well, dead, from the emotional side, since the Herons are now a crew that has teamwork down to a science. There wouldn't be any problems from the performance side of the crew and I couldn't see how he [the author] could insert that layer of emotions that cushions the story in general. But then Flanagan put Lydia in the picture. In a crew of adolescent males, a girl's presence can spring many emotional traps, ranging from self-consciousness to full-blown jealousy.
Of course, the fighting chapters are as vivid and realistic as any Flanagan piece. The ship talk is as accurate as ever (I checked), and, despite my earlier misgivings, the emotional levels were deeper than I ever expected.

My boy and I read all of Flanagan's "Ranger's Apprentice" series and were jazzed to learn he'd started a companion series. We both assumed the new series couldn't live up to his wonderful original set of stories. WRONG! These are just as much fun if not more. The stories are timeless, with themes of loyalty, overcoming adversity, growing from experience, learning from mistakes, and making hard choices. They are also exciting stories of grand adventure. My son told me yesterday that he looks forward to reading them with his own child years from now. Thing is, I can easily imagine that happening.
I am just finishing this book. It is the 2nd in the Brotherband series. I started reading the series to see if I could get my sons interested. Now I am hooked. My son is in 6th grade and is required to do monthly book reports on books that are atleast 400 pages. These books are all about 432 in pages. It is a fantastic series. I can't wait to keep reading. The author is so detailed and imaginative.
