Nuts by Alice Clayton is a refreshingly fun romantic comedy. Sometimes when I’m reading I’ll think ‘This would make a perfect movie.’ I could easily see this book on the big screen. It was sweet, funny, smart and sassy.

Roxie is a chef to the stars in LA. She loves her job, it’s exactly what she wants to be doing. When her mom calls her with a request to run the family’s diner for the summer, Roxie does it, even though it’s the last thing she wants to do. Her first week there, she runs into a man who makes her look twice. Roxie knows there is something special about Leo, but the thing is, she doesn’t do love.

Roxie is also not planning on staying in this small New York town forever. Leo is a farmer in her town, and isn’t planning on going anywhere. They have the summer together. When they’re together, sparks fly. Their chemistry is palpable. You can tell when their attraction starts to shift into something more. Something that scares Roxie. Her plan is and has always been to help her mom out, run the diner for the summer, then go back to California. Now things are changing. She’s got all kinds of small town ideas. She sees possibilities. Is this change in her life something she’s willing to risk? Or is going back to California the path she’ll take…

Roxie is a character I think most of us can relate to. She struggles with doing what she wants to do with her life and following her dreams. When her dreams become something she least expected, it takes her a minute to embrace that change. Change can be scary, but it can also be a great thing. Leo is a great man. As much as I love both characters separately, together is where they really shine. Leo and Roxie together are a hoot. Clayton always writes the most naturally funny characters. No one is trying too hard, there is no slap stick humor, it’s just all around genuinely funny.

Alice Clayton’s writing style is always fun and fantastic. After reading Wallbanger, I had such high expectations I felt as though nothing she's written since really lived up to that book… Until I read Nuts. This is my new favorite book by her. It made me laugh, it made me smile, and just left me in an all around good mood. If you’re looking for a fun book with a feisty heroine, great hero and a charming storyline, pick this one up!

Nuts The Hudson Valley Series Alice Clayton 9781501118135 Books Reviews

Alice Clayton’s Nuts is a funny, romantic novel set in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley. I loved Roxie as a character. She’s hilarious! Despite wanting to flee small town life, Roxie is still an Eastern girl to a tee. As someone originally from Michigan living in Los Angeles, I could relate to how Roxie viewed the Hollywood wives. So much of it rang true to me, that I couldn’t help but laugh. The difference in food, and grocery shopping (and packaging) was one of the biggest differences I dealt with when I first moved out West. Angelenos may like food, but they are suckers for the latest fad diets and trends, and notorious calorie counters. Manhattanites, on the other hand, love food, and get most of the workout from walking around the city. Having only been to NYC, it was nice seeing how it differs from upstate New York.

While working at her family’s diner, Roxie meets gorgeous local farmer, Leo Maxwell. Their “meet cute” was just that – cute. After a series of embarrassing run-ins, these two finally decided to have a proper date. The chemistry between Leo and Roxie was amazing as the food Roxie cooked through the book. I really enjoyed how their relationship developed slowly over the course of the book. While I knew they would end up together, it was nice reading how they got there. Like Roxie, Leo is a great, funny guy, and the two seemed made for each other.

Aside from Roxie and Leo, the novel is full of fun of quirky characters that made the story come alive. From Roxie’s high school crush, to her employees at the diner, and her two best friends, I can’t wait to read more of this series. I would recommend Nuts to fans of romantic comedies. The book will have you laughing from beginning to end, and there’s no way you won’t devour this book in one sitting. The characters are well-written, the world building is perfection, and all the talk of food will have you salivating. Or maybe that’s the hot, hot sex scenes. Either way, Nuts is a must read!
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS - Very clever hilarious banter between an LA private chef Roxie & a hipster farmer from upstate NY Leo. Roxie is originally from Bailey Falls, NY & ran like hell to get into cooking school across the country. But she's back, covering for her hippie mother's diner for the summer, surprising herself by reconnecting with old friends, creating a niche with her homemade cakes like grandma used to bake, & loving her summer fling with Leo so much that she starts creating a "should I stay or should I go" checklist. Lots of physical comedy as Roxie spills Leo's nuts and later has his sugar snap peas flying everywhere as she lands face down in his lap. The best part is the evolution of her new nickname - Sugar Snap - swoon!! "Maybe you'll show up at my back door with your nuts again." Plenty of hot, hot chemistry too. Their first love scene, on the front porch no less since they couldn't wait, started with Roxie alone in her bedroom. "I'm outside. And I can hear you. You said my name. Let me in." Roxie gets the surprise of her life when she shows up on his farm unannounced & unfortunately her painful past growing up with boyfriend after boyfriend coming & going comes back to haunt her, a mistake she will not repeat with Leo & his family! In the years she's been gone she has grown a lot & desperately wants to try with Leo, especially after he spills the beans about his past as a Wall Street rich playboy who was burned & burned good. Loved the characters, loved the witty banter & sweet love!
