This is a good series and I really am sad that the NightRunner series is at least on hold. There's so much left to do. There will be partial spoilers and full spoilers later so stop now if you don't want them.
This was a decent romp through Rhiminee. More of a mystery fantasy than war fantasy as the other books had been it has murder and intrigue galore and as a mystery it's not great as the reveal comes a tad early to me though as in the other books there's more than one plot to untwist in the book.
As a series I both loved it and dreaded the Nightrunner books. Some were truly great and one was a fast skim for 2/3 of the book as I found it to well written for an uncomfortable topic. The writing for the most part was so well handled that the meandering nature of the stories made a pleasant read.
For my big complaint is stopping at Shards of time, if only for now. There was to little of Aurenen in the stories, though for the most part that fits the other plots. Aurenen needs the services of good nightrunners. Viresse is in dire need of being called to task for their de' facto alliance with Plenimar.. Aurenens tolerance of Plenimars slave taking could be dealt with at the same time. Then we have in the North the Hazadriefaie have taken a most questionable solution to staying safe for such an honor bound society. They as well could be involved in what I like to consider the Plenimar solution. These are the large untouched issues that could easily fuel 3-4 additional books. Not to forget that Alec and Seregil are essentially kids and in another 50 years or so. Alec Seregil Thero and Nyal would be the main carry over characters to all sorts of adventures. Becca and Nyal could also have a kid or two who would live as long. So lots to hope for and lots I'd hoped resolved.

For more reasons than I'm going to take the time to say, the Nightrunner series has always meant a lot to me. I cannot understate how grateful I am that Ms. Flewelling has wrote them --- or that the series is being published so regularly now. I suppose the thing I like best, other than the massive emotional investment I, like many readers, have into these fully-realized characters, is that the story is so....refreshing. Nice, even --- in the sense that there's action and adventure, without brooding and over-wrought emotion; there's darkness without sensationalism; there's a lot of lightness and playfulness; and best of all, it has an actual, strong, tight story to support it. (And it's not a skimpy purchase, either; Ms. Flewelling gives readers value for their money.)

Looking back, I'm not sure I described myself well. Maybe what I'm trying to say is that I enjoyed every second reading this story. Not for one moment did I feel that the author was trying to manipulate my reaction. If a scene made me sad, it's because it was a genuinely sad scene; and if I laughed, it was because something was genuinely funny. The fact that I've spent so much time with these characters in previous books just made the experience that much deeper and richer.

Thank you, Ms. Flewelling, for writing this series. I hope you have many, many, many books left in you.
This book took me much longer to finish than usual because it lagged so much at the beginning. I do not mind political intrigue when it forms the basis of a plot, but, as another reviewer pointed out, the political intrigue here just served as a drawn out distraction from the main antagonist. The two competing "cabals" interested in influencing the royal succession just taper away to nothing once Seregil deduces the real danger. I found that rather unsatisfying. That said, once I reached the midway point, I could not put the book down!

Nearly all the action of Casket of Souls takes places in Rhíminee, making the story fairly self-contained. Occasionally, the narrative jumps to Klia and Beka in the midst of the war with Plenimar, but for the most part the story focuses on Seregil and Alec, and their interaction, manipulation and burglary of the various Skalan nobles. The two engage in a lot of nigthrunning, which spiced up the story while also taking it back to its roots. The boys are as much fun as ever and just as devoted to one another. Alec's lingering sorrow over Sabrahn makes sense and I hope to see a resolution to that at some point. I'd love to see them take in a scamp to train and raise as their son or daughter.

The second half of the book picked up the pace considerably as our heroes discover the villains and play a game of cat and mouse with them, with the lives of their friends in the balance. I was also glad to see the powers-that-be finally acting in their own best interests in terms of seeing AND admitting the value of Alec and Seregil's services. Phoria's attitude toward them was always a bit ridiculous to me and I was happy to see her mostly absent from the story. I've read online that the next novel is intended to be the last Nightrunner book (for the time being at least), and the conclusion of this novel certainly sets the stage for that to be the case. All familiar characters are revisited and "resolved" in some way death, happily ever after, what have you. The ending was very satisfying.

Overall, though this is not the strongest in the series, longtime fans are likely to be satisfied. Highly recommended.
