Those Chapel Hollow people are different, but it doesn't do to remark on it. People who do, well strange things happen to them. Best just pretend you don't see. That's what the people in Arcadia do. Best not to stir things up.Then a drifter, name of Tom Renfield, comes to town. People like him, but they figure he won't be around long. Drifters come, and drifters go. He probably wouldn't stay around long if it hadn't been for Laura. She's come back to town for a wedding at Chapel Hollow and hires Tom to drive her there. That's the beginning.
Seems that Tom, while not of Chapel Hollow, has some powers of his own. Powers as strong as any of the Chapel Hollow people.
This delightful book by Hoffman explores the people of Chapel Hollow and their relationship with the small town of Arcadia in a delightful mix of magic realism and love.

A subtle witches and padlocks take where a once mutually beneficial relationship between humans of Arcadia and the magical folk of Chapel Hill. Over time relations descend into domination, slavery and fear through one bitter witch who corrupts the children against the people of Arcadia throwing life out of balance for both.
By far one of my favorite books. The magic system, the characters, the writing what's not to love!
I would love to read a sequel...
How did I not read this years ago?!? I’ve read other books from this series but never this one.
This is what good urban fantasy looks like. Magic is there and it changes how things work, but the story is deeper than the magic.
Personally, I loved this book. A different take on magic. Chapel hallow has scared people from the surrounding town for years. They come and steal people away that are never seen again. They use to help the town prosper or in times of trouble, things change once Tom comes to town. Easy read I couldn't put it down loved the characters and the descriptions of the magic were described so well I could picture it. One of my favorites.
I won't write a synopsis of the book, as others have already done this. I will just say that I am really enjoying Nina Hoffman's Chapel Hollow books. They are very nearly as good as Alex Bledsoe's Tufa novels, which is high praise indeed! Chapel Hollow has the same "could be real" feel about the people and the places, and has a similar mesmerizing aura. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the Chapel Hollow series (not a series in strict sense, as the books can be read in any order and involve separate main characters).
Magical and lyrical this is the book that made me fall in love with Nina Kiriki Hoffman. Finally on kindle! Every few years I want to reread it, and even though I know what is going on, I still get almost as much enjoyment from the characters and the world of chapel hollow. The bonus stories are a fantastic addition for this long time fan, filling in the never explained backstory of Hannah, and a glimpse of life for two of the main characters years later.
I already own this in paperback and I’ve read it many times, but I had to pick it up in so that I can find it whenever I want to read it without searching through hundreds of books. Today I read it on a plane, even though it always brings tears to my eyes. (One of the few advantages of age is a total lack of caring what others may think.) It has mystery, magic and whimsy, with a wondrous but believable setting, relatable and believable characters, high magic, even villains with relatable and very human motivations. There are very few tales I would place on par with this, and those authors (de Lint, Huff, Cherryh, Koontz) are typically household names. Highly recommended.
