I owned the body book when I was young. Now that I have a daughter, who's 7, I figured I'd get her these series. My daughter struggles with telling her feelings(thanks mean kids) and she immediately dove into this book. Read thru it myself and I'm sure parents could take advice from it! It'll give some scenarios and you're to answer how you'd react. Talks about anger, sadness, loneliness, grieving, jealousy, etc. I think this book would be good to read to your 4yo to help her learn early but 10yo might consider it too "kiddish" considering what kids are into these days. Overall, good book!Tags : The Feelings Book: The Care & Keeping of Your Emotions (American Girl) (American Girl Library) [Dr. Lynda Madison, Norm Bendell] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This book really helps my daughter in gaining and utilizing tools on how to take care of her emotional self. It's practical information that she uses and can easily understand. Quiet as it's kept, it helps me as well in dealing with my own emotions and helping her and she learns. developmentally appropriate for my younger children as well as my preteens -)
I highly recommend this book. It's a great way to begin a conversation about feelings and a great tool for labeling and expressing feelings. I use most of this information with my child and teen clients in my psychology practice so I found this book to contain accurate information in a friendly user presentation. I bought this book for my niece since her mother died and she has been holding onto her feelings. She refuses to go to therapy, but this book has info she would get from a therapist. A great find!!
Definately a great book for girls 8-11 years old. My daughter started having moods swings all over the place at the age of 9. Examples crying over the smallest things, getting upset because she thinks we are...etc... We got her this book to read hopeing it would help her understand them. I think it helped more becuase she read eevrything and saw that she isnt the only one who has emotional rollercoasters. It helped her see she wasn't abnormal. Whenever she feels upset she grabs this book and reads it. So if anything it gives her something to do to calm herself down.....
This book is very helpful for girls and parents alike. Whether you have close communication with your daughter or not, this book is a must. After reading the last chapter in "The Care and Keeping of You" book, (that touches on feelings), my daughter told me that she'd like to learn more about her feelings, and luckily, I had already ordered this book. She loves it, and it brings up issues that she wants to discuss with me. Opens the door to communication in a 'non-prying parent' sort of way. Especially in this day, and at this age (8-teens...or older!), this book is a great resource for families. I would suggest parents read it as well.
Our family went through some real tragedy this year and we bought this book for our 9yo daughter on the advice of her counselor. It was an excellent book - it really helped my daughter understand and deal with her emotions. She worked through the book and it really seemed to give her insight into herself and how to cope with all the [very normal but quite overwhelming] emotions she was having.
This is an excellent book and I think it would be helpful for ANY girl as she approaches puberty and starts to mature into a young lady.
This was the first American Girl book I have ever bought. I ordered it for my 8.5 year old niece. I picked this book because my niece has been having trouble with expressing her feelings appropriately and seems to be having some problems fitting in. This book has been great. I was able to flip through it before I gave it to her. It covers a lot of topics and I am pleased with it. It is written well and is simple for young girls to understand. I would recommend it for 8-13 year old girls. It even had small quizzes in it to help the reader understand what is making them angry/sad/happy etc. Then it goes on to help the reader see how they deal with the emotion and whether or not that is effective. The book gives suggestions on how to deal with emotions more maturely.
Being a dad, this book makes it easy to approach some subjects that are awkward for girls to hear from a dad. Read it as a parent. It's approach will simplify some subjects that dumbfound you. I tend to complicate what I say, when my child doesn't want or need to hear all of my words.
Plus, American girl books are designed to let a girl read on her own and be alone with her thoughts, so I just get in the way of that process. Some of this book is for younger girls but your older young ladies will pick out what they want to find out from the varied content.
American Girl books are all well thought out, well written, and well presented. Most important, my daughter loves them all and reads the books cover to cover. In many cases, she reads them over and over.
Practical and real advice presented in a way that a young lady wants to read and absorb.
What more could you ask for? Worth every penny.
